Look how great the 5th Grade's Oil Pastel drawings of the Three Wisemen turned out!!
We started December's Christmas art project with the practice of proper proportion figure drawing. (You might be able to see that some of the students had fun exaggerating the muscle structure of the Wise men and made..Megatron-men. Very funny!) We talked about the clothes these special men might have worn to protect them from the extreme heat or cold temperatures and the sandy climate they would be traveling through to see our Lord. Also, the fine quality of cloth a king could afford in that age and how that should look in our drawings. Finally, before we began our final drawing on the good surface, we practiced all we had learned on plain paper.
The students prepared their unusual drawing surface by "distressing" corrugated cardboard. First, they peeled off one of the three layers of a square of cardboard around the edge of the center where they would be drawing their subjects. Then they painted it with black acrylic paint. Once dried, the surface was ready to be drawn on with a white crayon to give the artist a balanced composition and proper figure proportion. Then the students added colored oil pastels which acted as a wax "resist" for the sparkle water color wash. The sparkle of the sparkly watercolors seemed to add the perfect finishing touch to a magical scene. Well done group! Enjoy showing your family.
